Sweet Treat

In our house, we love chocolate covered strawberries! It’s the perfect sweet treat mix of healthy and not so healthy. The only problem is, the price! I have seen these babies priced anywhere from 30 to 70+ dollars! To me, that is insane!

Of course, it that is what you prefer or are sending someone a gift, I understand. They do look a bit more professional coming from a company that has all the tricks and tools to make them clean and appetizing.

BUT, if you are a busy mom like me and don’t mind the messy look – or the mess, make them yourself!

I made these today with my 4 year old son and we had so much fun. He loved dipping the strawberries into the chocolate, swirling it around, and then covering it in sprinkles. He had a blast! And then he ate about 3 of the biggest ones we had. He loved them.

The Chocolate

When I was shopping for the chocolate and sprinkles, my plan was to just use baking chocolate and melt it with a little coconut oil on the stove. That was until I found Wilton Candy Melts.

I didn’t read the directions before I bought these candy melts, I just knew they were for melting and dipping. When I went to melt the candy down, I read the back of the bag and realized these are meant to be melted in the microwave in just a few minutes. To be honest, how long I feel it takes to melt down chocolate on the stove, I was a bit excited I could just pop these into the microwave and be done with it.

I put the candy into a glass measuring cup and melted it down in about 3 minutes, in 1 minute increments stirring in between, and wah-la! So dang simple!

The Process

Now, here’s the part that I don’t understand, this process is so dang simple yet we only make these chocolate covered strawberries maybe once a year! Why!?

You want to start off with fresh and washed strawberries. I washed mine and then patted them dry with a paper towel. You want them dry or the candy won’t stick to the berry.

I laid some parchment paper over a cooling rack to use as a drying station for the strawberries.

Once the candy has been melted and can be handled, take a strawberry by the green top and dip it into the candy. You want to cover it basically as far up as you can. When you pull it out, there will be some drizzle so just wait until it has slowed and then move it to the parchment paper to dry.

Drying time only takes a few minutes and the strawberries are ready to be eaten.

It really is that stinkin simple!!

Toppings

Of course chocolate covered strawberries are delicious on their own, but to make it fun, you can add some toppings. If you choose to add toppings, be sure to add them while the chocolate is still wet, otherwise they won’t stick.

Toppings to use:

  • Sprinkles
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Crushed Pretzels
  • Crushed Oreos
  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Crushed Graham Crackers
  • Drizzle White Chocolate
  • M&Ms

We loved making these chocolate covered strawberries! I hope you will love them just as much as we do!

Until next time,
