Congratulations! Twins!
What a wild ride I’m sure you’re on! Being a twin mom myself, I know ALL about the excitement, nervousness and being totally terrified about how you are going to take care of and afford TWO little ones!
Rest assured, I have you covered, Mama!
As an experienced mom of 6, I feel like I’ve seen and done it all. Dirty diapers, late nights, bottle feedings, breastfeeding, ear infections, upset tummies, having to discipline when you don’t want to, mom guilt, frustration, postpartum, etc., etc., etc.
If you’re new to the mom game, you can see just from the little bit I’ve shared, there is a lot that goes into momming. Is momming even a word?
So, I’m sharing a few of my favorite must haves for twins from newborn until about six months! However, just because you are having twins, doesn’t necessarily mean you have to two of everything. I’ll help your wallet and let you know what you need two of!
Also, this list can be super helpful for singletons as well, not just for twins!
Oh, and if you’re new to twinning, “singleton” is the term for a single baby – something I never heard of until the twins!
So, let’s get started!
My number one must have for twins or singletons alike is for sure Receiving Blankets!
In our household, receiving blankets are used as everything for babies! Need a swaddle when the babes are newborns? Receiving blanket. Burp rag to clean up all that baby mess? Receiving blanket. Need to lay a blanket down to change the babe? Receiving blanket.
As you can see, receiving blankets are so versatile and we use them for everything! If you have twins, they are used double time so I suggest having more than you think you will need on hand!
My next must have is any of the Aquaphor Baby Line!
Babies need as much moisture for their delicate skin as possible. This line has been a godsend for our babies! Four of our babies have had dairy allergies from birth and has caused eczema to the point one of them needed lotion every single diaper change! Yes, it was Aquaphor saving the day! Or, should I say legs? This mom has dad jokes! Ha Ha
What we love about Aquaphors line is that it can be used as a protective lotion, as it is a vaseline base lotion. This helps not only to moisturize but protect the skin as well! It can also be used as a diaper rash ointment! Again, this product is versatile and one of the reasons we love it so much! Check out their body wash and shampoo for babies here.
Next up, baby loungers! For us, we were gifted a Boppy Lounger and it was amazing for the twins as newborns, I wish we had one for each of our older babies as newborns! This is one item that I do suggest getting TWO of. This is a great alternative to the original Boppy because it allows the babies to lay on top without sliding down. However, the original Boppy nursing pillow can be used for nursing, as well as move up with the babies for different purposes as they grow, such as, tummy time and support while learning to sit.
Another option is the Twin Z Pillow. Now, I never used this, but I know almost every mom in my twin mom groups have suggested this pillow, especially if they breastfed. This allows you to have a baby on either side of you, supported, while you tandem feed.
If you plan to leave the house, even just to go outside, you’re going to want a stroller. I highly suggest the Baby Trend Sit N Stand, it is a must have for sure!!! We love this stroller because its super easy to use and the twins are both able to see everything when they are both in it and both carriers easily fit in the seats. This is definitely a stroller than can be used from birth on up and is great when there are more little ones along the way! There is even an added perk for older kids to stand on the step as you move! We all know little kids like independence but they can’t keep up, so the step is perfect for this!
Babies love to be held, that is a fact! We used this Moby Wrap and the twins loved it! I was away once while my husband stayed with the twins and using the wrap was the only way to keep both babies calm! Of course, always be vigilant of positioning and having the wrap tight enough. When the twins are young, they can both fit in one wrap. This may become difficult once they are older.
Bath time with newborn twins can be tricky, especially if there is only one of you during bath time. A good thing though, you most likely won’t be bathing both babies at the same time until they are able to sit on their own without support. We have used this Summer Deluxe Bay Bather for all of our kids and it’s perfect! The backing is adjustable so as they grow you can raise or lower the back. We have used this same seat from their first bath until they can sit unsupported. Extra perk – you only need one, it’s inexpensive and lasts! Woo hoo!!
As I said earlier, I don’t always recommend having two of everything. This is just because you are not sure what each baby will prefer such as a swing like the Graco DuetSoothe Baby Swing and Rocker, a bouncer like the Fisher-Price Deluxe Bouncer, or a pack n play like the Graco Pack ‘n Play Care Suite Playard! Each baby is different, even twins, so having at least one of everything on hand is a great idea until you understand your babies preferences.
Trust me, your house is going to fill up fast so there is no sense in having two of everything unless you are absolutely sure you need two! Rule of thumb with twins: Always have at least one of everything.
Finally, of course, there are a few things that you can not get away with only having one of and those would include having two cribs, highchairs, and car seat carriers each.
Remember, babies really only need love….and diapers, food, baths, toys, cuddles, blankets….you get the idea!
Happy shopping, Mama!
